Mikes MusicLOCAL MUSIC CDs  --- This web site is maintained by me - Michael Ludgate. I originally started this as a beginner fiddle player who was excited to share everything I learned about folk music with my friends. (more at MySpace.com take a look!) To keep myself and the rest of my musician friends organized I started a music email list and this web page. It has really evolved into more than that. It is a valuable networking resource for the musicians: both beginner and expert, amateur and professional. It really only works if you use the information and stay on the list. It also works better if you help: send me your gigs and other interesting music information and I'll get the word out to the rest of the list. For clarification: I maintain 3 email lists; one each for Customers of Ludgate Farms, another for mostly Folk Music [ Mikes-Music ] and a third for outdoor exercise (Cycle and XC-Ski)... if you want to be on any or all of these email lists just let me know at email Mike Hit reload or refresh every time you visit: this page changes often! [ SUBSCRIBE Mikes-Music ] The music email list generates about 1 email per day ... sometimes more ... sometimes less -:)

New Album from Traonach ...

"Macintosh Jon" traditional Irish Music made in Ithaca ...  This wonderful recording is on sale at Ludgate Farms. Some history... From Traonach's
first album: "About the name Traonach ("TRAY-knock") Traonach is the Gaelic term for the corncrake, a reclusive and entirely inoffensive bird formerly common throughout Europe, Central Asia, and Northern Africa. In Ireland its gentle, evocative call (although it is quite raucous at night) was once as familiar as the cuckoo's, but modern farming developments (particularly the increased use of machine harvesters) have brought the traonach to the brink of extinction; it is a very rare class of creature in most of Europe and even Ireland today. The Traonach has been celebrated in Irish mythology. It is shown intertwined with a heron in the sixth-century Book of Kells; in the stamps of numerous countries from the Ukraine to Ireland, and in print or song by the likes of Flann O'Brien, Archie Fisher, the Pogues, and Silly Wizard. We all liked the name and the rural association (for this music is of a famously rural cast) but when we heard that Felix McGowan's nickname for the youthful Ed was "The Corncrake," the vote was unanimous."

New CD recording at Ludgate Farms from:
Kristina Stykos

Born in Ithaca, NY, Kristina came of age in the heartland of a lusty and wildly growing folk music scene, led by a new Kristina Stykoswave of acoustic guitar and fiddle driven bands. From the rural fields of Trumansburg’s old time music gatherings to cozy Sunday night coffeehouses to gigantic Woodstock-like concerts on campus, Kristina stood looking on with a fierce passion growing within to find her way to the stage.

Kristina’s performing life began in Boston where she moved in 1976, as opportunities arose for solo gigs in Cambridge clubs and restaurants. Meanwhile, her double life as a waitress, student and worker bee in the avante garde film-making community led her to the punk lofts of the Italian North End, rocker parties in city mansions and other stimulating and eye-opening venues of self-expression. A consequent spiritual crisis precipitated her pilgrimage to Vermont in 1980, where she ultimately settled and began the slow work of deepening her introspective skills as a songwriter. In the quiet of a remote mountain town in winter, she wrote most of the material for her first self-produced album of original music “Crazy Sorrows” in 1986, while living in a cabin with no running water, and just enough electricity to run her electric piano.

The combination of these three women, each prolific in their songwriting and tunesmithing, makes Bellatrix radiant in the night sky of contemporary acoustic music. Each offers up a stirring and independent voice; together they touch the heart and soul of their American roots.

Kristina currently resides in Chelsea, VT with her husband, guitar-maker Michael Millard, and their three children.

Best CDs of 2004 (Ithaca Journal)
by Jim Catalano 12/30/2004 Ticket:

"As 2004 winds to a close, it's time for me to announce the winners of my annual Soundoff awards, nicknamed the "Jimmies." I started doing these awards in 1994 to recognize my favorite acts of the Ithaca music scene, which continues to teem with immensely talented people (especially the current crop of high school bands).

There were around 30 CDs released locally in the past year (plus a few more from neighboring Cortland), and while I didn't get to hear of all them, I did listen to the ones that made it to my mailbox at the Journal before early December.

As always, these award choices are entirely subjective and the categories are completely arbitrary. The winners (I try not to repeat them from the previous year) receive absolutely nothing except a handshake and a "Way to Go" next time I see them around town.

The envelopes, please:" [ article and awards ]

Marcy Prochaska ..
[ CD Review Ithaca Times ]

This CD is now on sale at Ludgate Farms [ title list ] ...

Hammered dulcimer artist Marcy Prochaska has completed a new album of instrumental Christmas What Child is This CD covermusic. Recorded at Electric Wilburland, What Child Is This? features hammered dulcimer with guitar, recorder, bowed psaltery, and fiddle. Some of the pieces are familiar, such as "Silent Night" and "O Come, O Come Emmanuel," while others are new, like "Fallen," or less well-known, like "The Lord at First Did Adam Make." Together, these tunes tell a broad story of Christmas, looking back to the Fall in Eden that Christmas promises to redeem, and looking forward to Easter when that promise was fulfilled.

For more information, please visit Marcy's website, http://mp-dulcimer.com.
