scroll to end for recent ...
====================
Hi all,
For the third summer now we'll be running Summer Sea Kayaking Thursdays as an informal learning/teaching/socializing/exploring/relaxing evening on the lake. We'll be kicking off this summer's season in a little more than a week, on 5/31 meeting at the usual time of 6:30pm at East Shore Park. Those getting a boat from COE meet at 5:00pm at COE to be able to get geared up, boats loaded and down to the park by 6:30pm.
Feel free to forward this to folks that you know and just send me a note if you'd like to be pulled from the emailing list.
The answers to (almost) all of your questions below:
Thanx and hope to see you on Cayuga,
Ben
The Overview:
A loose group of folks meeting every Thursday evening, 6:30 pm, at East Shore Park to work on kayak skills, improve kayak related teaching skills, do a little touring, and enjoy the summer and Cayuga Lake.
The Philosophy:
Kayaking is fun. There's a bunch of us that would like to share that with others. There's a certain amount of basic safety precautions that we'll be taking to ensure that it remains fun. (See "What to Expect" and "Required Gear.") This is in part an opportunity for some folks that teach kayaking to work on their teaching, and in part an opportunity for folks to develop kayaking skills and experience. This is not a COE class, nor is it a COC trip, although we'll probably draw most of our participants from the member pools of these two organizations. We are bunch o' folks that think it's be a good idea to get together to paddle and learn from each other.
What to Expect:
Some of us are certifiable paddle nuts, but, by design, the majority of folks will range from entirely new to novice. We usually spend about an hour to an hour and a half near the put-in working on strokes, re-entries, maybe playing a kayaking game, then finish the evening with an up and back sunset tour of the lake.
Generally, it's up to you what you want to work on. To make it an enjoyable experience (remember it ain't fun if yer wigged out,) there'll be a few things that we'll expect everyone to do, or, more appropriately, learn to do.
*Paddle as part of the group.
*Demonstrate a comfortable, calm wet exit. (How to get out upside down.)
*Demonstrate an effective deep water re-entry, assisted or solo.
We find that, on the whole, learning what to do in the event of a capsize makes for a much more enjoyable experience than trying to figure it our for the first time when you've capsized for real.
The Gear:
There's a lot of it; us humans weren't designed very well for extended water contact, so we have to use a lot of those tools for which we're so famous. Please note that the required gear is so required for safety and so we'll be sticklers there. There's lots of ways to beg, borrow, and, er, borrow gear so don't let the list intimidate you. (See "Getting Yer Gear" below.)
Required Gear:
-Kayak with adequate flotation (defined as fore and aft bulkheads and watertight hatches, or properly secured fore and aft float bags.)
-Well fitted Personal Flotation Device (PFD) (kayak style Type III recommended)
-Spray skirt (best= full neoprene, 2nd best= neoprene deck with nylon tunnel, distant 3rd= all nylon: remember to try it on the boat for fit as well as on yourself)
-Paddle (210-230 cm recommended)
-Closed toed shoes (wetsuit booties or old sneakers, zebra mussels will carve up your feet otherwise)
-Appropriate dress for /*Water*/ temperature (usually means at least sleeveless wetsuit for Cayuga Lake, remember she's deep)
-Some way to get this pile o' gear to East Shore Park (directions below)
Highly Recommended Gear:
-Bilge Pump
-Paddle Float
-Nose plugs
-Waterproof Flashlight (required for dusk/night paddles if folks want to stay a bit longer)
-Water bottle
-Snack
Nice to Have Gear:
-Towel/ warm dry clothes for when we're done
-Baked goods to share
-Wool socks for inside of booties/old sneaks
-
We'll be there rain or shine. (Be sure to dress appropriately; wet and warm can be fun, wet and cold is just miserable.) First sign of lightning and we're outa there.
Getting Yer Gear:
There are several options:
1) Bring yer own stuff. By all means. Please note our safety requirements where applicable.
2) COC has two touring kayaks and assorted paddling gear. Gear nights are general Thursday ~5:00 pm, perfect! Members know the deal. Non-members should think about joining.
3) COE has a 11 touring kayaks and assorted paddling gear. Kayak, paddle, and PFD normally run $25 for a day, but COE has a certain Outfitting Manager that is interested in getting folks out to paddle, so he's worked as much of a deal as he can.
"However much gear you need to get on the water for the Thursday night"- $10, no reservations. Available: Kayak, paddle, PFD, wetsuit, paddling jacket, wetsuit booties, spray skirt, bilge pump, paddle float, waterproof flashlight. First come, first served. And, like any good dealer, first one's free. Meet at COE at 5:00 pm sharp for folks who want to take advantage of this option.
Directions:
Take Rt. 34 north from Stewart Park
Turn left opposite Cornell's lake source cooling building into East Shore Park.
You should see a bunch of cars with large brightly colored objects on top at this point.
Or... mapquest for 1190 East Shore Drive, Ithaca
That's what I know:
A bunch o' folks kayaking, enjoying the lake, and learning from each other. Please feel free to email me or call me if you have any further questions.
Hope to see you on the water,
Ben

Hi All,
Just a reminder. There is sea kayaking tonight. Ben won't
be able to make it tonight. However, he has still arranged
for boats to rented. Just stop by COE and ask the wizard
for details.

Hi Everyone,
Thursday's T-storms failed to materialize and Liz, Bryan,
Chris, John, and I had a good time paddling. Chris managed
to get a balance brace. Liz and Bryan did a roll for the MV
Manhattan. John worked some bow rescue techniques. I got
to play with a cross bow rudder. Some people have asked
about reading material and below are some books I'd recommend.
*/The Complete Sea Kayaker’s Handbook/ by Shelley Johnson*
Good intro to sea kayaking. From rescues to strokes.
*/Sea Kayaking Safety and Rescue/ by John Lull* Very
detailed book on rescues and safety. Lots of details
including crossing shipping channels, big waves, rolling,
and much more.
*/The Complete book of Sea Kayaking/ by Derek Hutchinson*
Derek Hutchinson is a well known kayak designer. Many of
his designs are made by Current Designs. Very complete
book. Includes a bit of history, boat design, strokes,
rescues, and wave techniques.
*/Canoe and Kayak Handbook/ by the British Canoe Union* This
book is more of a teaching guide. It takes you from
beginner to advanced techniques in a very British way. It
includes a chapter on Access rights to water. I'm glad I'm
not paddling British water.
*/Sea Kayak/ by Gordon Brown* Another British book. The
thing that drew me to this book was the cover photo of a
couple of kayaks going through some large waves. Most books
just show a body of water that is mirror flat. This book is
shows more advanced technique.
See you on the water,
- Daniel

Howdy All,
Just a little reminder that we'll be paddling tomorrow, same as every
summer Thursday, so carpe diem, summer will be gone before you know it.
The weather's supposed to be clear after today's thunderstorms and it'll
feel good to get wet after the recent heat wave.
See you on the lake,

Howdy Thursdayers,
Well, the forecast calls for the possibility of thunderstorms, but on
the radar it looks as if it might come through earlier and leave us
with a pleasant evening paddle. We're going to give it a try and paddle
with our weather eye alert. Rain's no problem, but first sign of
incredibly high-power electricity in the air and we're off the water.
COE boats are somewhat limited tonight so show up on time if you're
going that route for a boat.
See ya paddlin' soon,
Ben

Hi All,
Just a reminder that we'll be heading out tomorrow to kick off the season.
A few specific reminders:
-The lake is still quite cold so remember yer wetsuits or drysuits.
-Sunset is still early at this point in the year, so let's all be punctual so we can get our playtime. (Ready to paddle at 6:30pm at East Shore Park.)
-The COE boat rentals are on a first come, first served basis and sometimes we do run out of boats. (Meet a 5:00pm sharp at COE to make sure we can get outfitted, boats loaded on cars, and down to the lake in time to be paddling by 6:30pm.)
Feel free to hit me with any questions.
Huzzahs for paddling!
